CARVING THE ROAD FOR BUSINESS DEXTERITY

GENERAL INFORMATION

The sector of stockbreeding in our country is closely associated with the Greek land, its people, with the actual social organization. The traditional products of animal production, with milk, cheese and meat leading the way, are a priceless nutritional treasure, due to their quality, nutritional value but also the superiority of their taste.

It is not chance that aside from feta which is internationally known and its name is now secured as exclusively Greek twenty more Greek cheeses are secured as Protected Designation of Origin (POP).

The abilities of Greece to produce animal products of high quality in large quantities and to satisfy the demands of contemporary consumers are many, under the condition though that the geographic layout of the country and modern technology will be suitably utilized.

Stockbreeding in Greece accounts for 27% in the scale of our agricultural production in comparison with vegetable production that covers 70%. This proportion is an unfortunate distortion, given that for most agricultural products there is an absorption problem (we produce more than we can sell in the Greek and foreign markets), while to the contrary in the sector of animal products our country imports huge quantities of meat, dairy and cheese products, with all that results on the balance scale of the Greek economy and Greek stockbreeders.

Despite all this, thousands of families making a living in the Greek countryside have stockbreeding as their primary or exclusive profession which is literally the “blood donor” of areas that are arid, remote and disadvantaged.

On the other hand, Greek stockbreeding is the foundation upon which thousands of small and large manufacturing businesses have developed. Starting from the small district cheese making facilities scattered all across the country and ending at the large dairy factories, the sector of dairy and cheese products presents an enviable growth potential.
